Good old Arfur
Every evening as we are leaving Arthur's preschool, the program director, who is Chinese-Canadian and speaks with a fairly thick accent, says to him, 'Goodnight, Ah-suh' [asə:] ... to which he inevitably replies, "No, no, my name is Arfur!" [aɹfɘr]! Makes me laugh every time.

My Arthur calls himself "Ah-suh"! It makes him really sad that he can't introduce himself to people and have them understand him. The other day he said he didn't know any of the other children's names at the community centre because he couldn't say "Hi, my name is Arthur, what's your name?" I never would have thought of that when I chose his name! Is your little guy dispirited about the pronunciation challenge too?

No, I don't think he's dispirited. The only person he does this with is this one woman, because her accent is heavy enough that he doesn't recognize his own name when she pronounces it. Having said that, in general, Arthur has been pretty reticent about talking to other kids in general until the past month or so - which may be due to the fact that most of the kids he met in Montreal were francophones with whom he couldn't communicate at all.

That made me laugh, too. :)
