Frankey Frank
Arthur has taken to the notion that things are "from" other things. Specifically, that individual characters are from particular shows, like "Pablo is from the Backyardigans". Sometimes it goes even further, a nested hierarchy; "Wendy is from Bob the Builder ... Bob the Builder is from HIT Entertainment." (Damn you, HIT Entertainment). But what about his stuffed animals that aren't "from" anything? Last night, he was nestled in bed with Frank, his bear in a bunny suit (which he calls a 'snow-snoot', adorably) and remarked, half-asleep, "Frank is from ... Frankey Frank."

I mentioned some months ago that he is very interested in the shapes of things, and particularly associates things with the shapes of letters. He also now does this with his fingers, and this morning he held his hand up in a rough emulation of devil horns with his thumb extended, and said "Looks like a W". So I asked him, "Can you make it look like an A?" and sure enough, he turned his hand upside down and said "Looks like an A". Next I did it with C, and sure enough, he followed suit. So I said, "You know, you can make your hand look like any letter," to which he replied, "Make it look like an S?" Touché, little dude.

"Arthur, can you say 'nested hierarchy'?"

What I really need to do is find out what he says if I ask "Is Wendy from HIT Entertainment?"

I wonder whether Arthur would like "YMCA" just now.

Quick! Teach Him Fingerspelling!

Oh, hey, I learned it when I was in fourth grade and, because I learned it so young, it has never gone away.

I've used it dozens of times in my life when there was no one around who spoke Ameslan and no paper or pen to use to write a note for a deaf person in need.

Learn it! It's easy! It's useful!

Forgive my enthusiasm, but really, it was almost forty years ago and I have never regretted it.

Frank Snowsnootis from Frankey Frank. At least, it sounds right to me. :)
