Environment
As promised, a bonus poll. I don't expect to need a separate analysis post for these - it's mostly out of curiosity given the analysis I did on 'iron/'irony'. Note that for 'environment', I'm not concerned as to whether you pronounce the N in the third syllable fully, indistinctly, or not at all; I'm really just interested in where the R sound ends up. I plan to do another poll early next week, with analysis to follow afterwards, as usual.

Actually, I don't think I've ever said "environs" out loud before, though after some tasting, I suppose I'd say "en-vir-runs" if I weren't thinking about it.

But when I see the word in print, my brain thinks "onh-vee-ronh".

I do too. I never really thought about it before. Gosh.

I answered both for "environs", but actually I use neither. I don't think I ever said it aloud.

Actually, I say it closer to en-vie-rons than en-vie-runs but that wasn't an option.

I'm not positive, but I think I've heard the "rons" in environs pronounced like the name Ron (with an "s" at the end).

Maybe these are locality or regional pronunciations? The closest that I get to environment and environs is the "ron" instead of "run" pronunciation. And, for the former word, I've heard it a lot where the middle "n" isn't pronounced at all. Hmm..

... I'm really weird.

en-vie-roh-ment
en-vie-rons
sigh-ren/sigh-run

Of course, I spent the first four years of my life pronouncing nearly *everything* incorrectly (stuttering/regular speech problems), so a lot of that is still with me.

No "n" in the middle of "environment"
