Well, here I am again, posting pronunciation polls, and this one is a tough one. Let's hope it's not completely confusing. I couldn't even figure out how to accurately represent the variability in this word's pronunciation in just one question, so here is my three part thing on 'deluge':

I seem to use "dĕl'yūj" and "dā'lūj" interchangeably, although the latter more frequently. I also drop the 'y' sound for "deluged."

I answered 'sometimes' to the second question, because the answer is neither 'yes' or 'no', truly. There is a very faint 'y' sound in the second syllable, although I had to say it out loud once or twice to confirm it.

Perhaps oddly, that sound isn't there in my head- only when I vocalise the word. It may be purely a trick of the tongue. *g*

Hrm. I didn't do the first question of the poll, because, the was I pronounce it, the 'l' is in the second syllable - "dā' lüzh".

As with all polls of this type there is the problem of distinctions that folks don't make. I know some people who pronounce 'huge' and 'rouge' the same way.

I had to pause for a bit on that one as well, since I don't pronounce them very differently either.

That reminds me of that one book title: "The Tough Coughs As He Ploughs the Dough," about the early cartoons and writings of Dr. Seuss.

Indeed, and through a thorough search of one's lexicon, one can discover at least two other pronunciations. :)
