As a follow-up to
curtana's post from yesterday, I have now compiled what I think are most of Arthur's words (currently 121).
arm, baa, baby, ball, banana, Barney, bath, bear, beef, bees, blanket, bleat, bless, block, blue, boat, boob, book, boom, boot, bubble, burp, button, bye, car, cheep, Claire, clap, clock, close, cloth, clothes, cold, cookie, cow, Cthulhu, cup, dada, dance, die, dog, door, Dora, down, duck, ear, Elmo, face, fan, fish, five, flower, food, foot, Frank, goose, Grampy, guy, hair, hand, hat, hello, hi, horse, hot, kiss, kitty, lamp, leaf, Liam, light, mama, me, meow, monkey, moo, moon, more, mouth, Nanny, no, nose, num, one, open, Pablo, pants, peek, penis, phone, picture, pie, piece, pig, pillow, play, poo, Pooh, puff, purse, ring, sheep, shirt, shoes, socks, star, teeth, toe, toot-toot, towel, tree, truck, turkey, turtle, TV, two, watch, water, woof, worm, yuck
There are probably several I am forgetting. On the other hand, several that made it on the list may be spurious. In a few cases, he's only said them once, possibly while repeating something we said, but mostly these are ones that he produces spontaneously or in response to us pointing at an object. And, of course, he drops the final consonants of most syllables and generally abbreviates or blends together polysyllabic words in extremely cute ways.
Some notes and comments:
- He says 'Bleh' for 'bless you' after he sneezes. Heck, even I don't do that. What a polite little guy.
- He says 'boob' but mostly only when pointing at *my* man-boobs, not at Julia's. Or when he's pointing at my penis. Freud would have a field day.
- 'Blue' is his only colour, but it's definitely not spurious - he says it when pointing at all sorts of blue things, like the blue quilt that
joane made him and the blue mouthwash that sits on a rack in the bathroom.
- He is now saying 'burp' with all the phonemes clearly audible. This is odd because 'rp' is an unusual consonant cluster in English.
- He recognizes that both analog and digital clocks are clocks 'clah'.
- 'Cthulhu' is a plastic squid that he plays with in the bath. I freely admit that I chose this name in an effort to warp him, but other than the initial 'c', he gets the pronunciation down quite well.
- 'Ear' was mostly just 'ee' until about two weeks ago, but now is more clearly 'ear'.
- He loves the ceiling fans and the standing fans, and calls them both 'fan'. I think he is a bit perturbed that they are no longer spinning, what with the cooler weather.
- He knows the numbers 'one', 'two', and 'five' - sort of. If I say 'one' and hold up one finger, he will say 'two' and often attempt to raise my next finger. 'Three' and 'four' are a numerical no-man's-land, but he knows 'five' very well, at least in the context of an open palm, and will comply if you tell him to 'gimme five'.
- Frank is his favourite stuffed animal, a bear in a bunny costume. This morning he pointed to a bunny on the page and said 'Frah' (for Frank). Then on the same page there was a stuffed bear and he pointed to it and said 'Frah' again. We are *seriously* warping this kid. :)
- We're pretty sure he knows his Grampy (Julia's dad), as apart from 'guy', although I admit that we usually do say "Who's that guy?" when we point to someone in a picture. On the other hand, Grampy is the only person who he identifies as 'guy', other than the little wall hanging of a bearded guy.
- For a while, when I was wearing a wrist brace, he would say 'hand' and point to his wrist or even his lower arm, because I would say "Daddy has an owie on his hand". He's got it cleared up now.
- He says 'hi' when talking to people, but 'hello' is reserved for his conversations on the phone, or when he sees the phone. It's quite clear, only a little bit abbreviated 'H'loo, hloo'.
- We're not sure whether he's ever said 'kiss', but he definitely knows what it means, and he gives kisses to his stuffed animals if you ask him. But not Mommy and Daddy - he kisses us only when the mood strikes him, usually spontaneously.
- He says 'me' most often when he's looking at himself in the mirror, which has led us to wonder whether he's really just saying the first syllable of 'mirror'. But he's also said it independently of the mirror a few times, so who knows.
- While he loves to talk about the moon (full or crescent), and points it out in all his books, and on the frame of the mirror
elanya gave us as a wedding gift, we're not 100% sure whether he has actually seen the moon in the sky, since we don't usually take him outside at night.
- Lately he has been walking around with his finger up his nose saying 'nose, nose, nose'. Cute, that.
- Pablo, originally 'pa' but now more like 'p'lah' is from the Backyardigans, which appears to be his favourite TV show. Pablo also features in his Backyardigans book, which we found under the couch on Sunday. He was so excited and has been wandering around with it ever since saying 'p'lah'.
- Penis 'pee' is mostly a bathtime word, and often comes with pointing or smacking of Daddy. Aiee!
- Piece (also 'pee') refers to any small thing that he picks up off the floor and wants to show to us, possibly before eating it.
- Pillow is one of his favourite words, and he loves to pull out the pillows from under our heads in the morning to get us moving, while saying 'P'lo! P'lo!'
- 'Poo' is most heard right after he farts.
- 'Pooh', on the other hand, he says when he sees his Pooh blanket, his Pooh books, or even when he sees bees (because all Pooh things have bees).
- TV ... oh, why oh why did we ever let the child watch the TV? Oh, right, so we could have a few minutes to ourselves now and then. Anyway, not only can he turn the TV on and off from the set, and associate the remotes with the TV, but yesterday he identified the TV in a photo in which the TV was in the background.
