Well, it turns out that not very many people say 'POOL-tree', but a couple of you do. I'd never heard it before (or, rather, I almost certainly *had* heard it before but had never noticed it), but as it was explained to me by curtana, it makes sense when you consider its relation to the French poule. Unlike the last poll on 'corollary', it's not too plausible that people would encounter 'poultry' foremostly in writing. It would be interesting to know whether the francophones on my friends-list prefer 'POOL-tree' to 'POLE-tree', but I don't think any of them have responded to the poll.
