diphthong

When I say it it doesn't have two distinct syllables; more like two and a half. Best I can do without IPA is PAuhl-TREE.

Re: diphthong

Hmm, interesting! Out of curiosity, do you pronounce either 'pole' or 'pool' as 'PAuhl' (i.e., as one and a half syllables)?

Re: diphthong

Yes, both.
pole = poe-uhl, and pool = poo-awl

I can't decide if I think you are being silly, or turning into a pedant ;)

Well, hmmm ... I am often silly, and often pedantic, but ... no, I actually want to know!

I'd be much closer to "poltri"

Roughly a homonym of 'paltry', then?

Yep - poll (to rhyme with doll) tree...

I don't draw out either the 'pole' syllable or the 'tree' syllable. I guess 'pol-tri' might be the way I pronounce it.

Right, it's not whether it's drawn out, but of course it will be stressed (at least somewhat).

All of the above!
